At the heart of Radiacode Zero is an organic tissue-equivalent scintillator made from EPS100 polystyrene—a material that responds to gamma radiation much more like human soft tissue.

A conventional Geiger counter is different. Its detector is typically made of glass, steel, and gas—materials very different from human tissue. As a result, it can only approximate what different radiation energies mean for the human body, relying on broad averaging and carrying significant limitations.

Penetrating Radiation Is Far More Diverse Than Most People Imagine

Many people picture radiation as identical particles passing through space. Conventional Geiger counters work in much the same way—they primarily count detection events without measuring the energy of each interaction.

In reality, gamma rays come in a wide range of energies, and that difference matters. Lower-energy particles are more easily absorbed by air and the outer layers of the body, while higher-energy gamma rays can penetrate much deeper, reaching internal tissues and organs and contributing differently to radiation dose.

A conventional Geiger counter cannot distinguish between these energies. A low-energy photon and a high-energy photon may produce the same count, even though their contribution to dose can be very different.

Radiacode Zero measures the energy of various gamma interaction and uses this information to estimate the ambient dose equivalent rate H(10)—the internationally accepted quantity used to assess the potential impact of external gamma radiation on the human body.

Instead of simply counting radiation, Zero provides a more meaningful answer to the question that matters:

What does this radiation mean in terms of dose to the human body?

Stays reliable when others overrange

Most consumer Geiger counters have an upper measurement limit of around 1 mSv/h. Under normal everyday conditions, radiation levels this high are rarely encountered.

However, during a severe industrial accident or nuclear emergency, radiation levels in the first few days following such an event can rise hundreds or even thousands of times higher—even at considerable distances from the source.

When this happens, most consumer radiation meters reach their measurement limit, enter an overrange condition, and stop providing meaningful information.

Radiacode Zero continues measuring radiation levels up to 9 Sv/h (9,000 mSv/h)—a measurement range 9,000 times wider than that of a typical consumer Geiger counter.
